Checking and assuring real IAQ and energy performances through demand control and cloud connectivity

Since 2018, Renson has introduced a range of cloud-connected residential ventilation systems, including central and decentral mechanical extract ventilation (MEV), as well as fully mechanical systems with heat recovery (MVHR) (see Fig. 1). These systems incorporate smart control mechanisms that utilize different IAQ sensors (CO2, VOC, RH), to adjust the airflow rate(s) locally or centrally to the detected needs. The IAQ sensors are located at the control valves or at the central unit, but not within the rooms.

Big humidity data from smart ventilation systems

A smart ventilation system is generally equipped with a range of sensors. The data – or data derived from it - collected by these sensors can be used by both building owners, occupants and managers. A new generation of IoT  enabled residential ventilation systems allows collecting and analysing this data at scale to get a better view on typical IAQ conditions in dwellings. In this paper, the results from such an analysis on the first 900 installed devices of a new model with respect to moisture in relatively new Belgian dwellings is presented.

Mechanical ventilation performance assessment in several office buildings by means of Big Data techniques

Mechanical ventilation performance is a key issue related both to energy efficiency and indoor air quality. There are several techniques for measuring ventilation rates in buildings, such as blower boor tests, flow hoods, VAV box measurements and tracer-gas techniques. From several decades ago, tracer-gas techniques are recognized as the most widely employed method to estimate air exchange rate in buildings. These methods are based on the study of the temporal evolution of the concentration of an injected gas.
