Investigation of cabin air quality in commercial aircrafts.

This project covered 16 aircrafts including both smoking and non-smoking flights from June 1996 to August 1997. The parameters concerned were carbon dioxide (C02), humidity, temperature, carbon monoxide (CO), ozone (03), bacteria, fungus, and respirable suspended particulate (RSP). Compared with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) standard, C02, CO and ozone levels on all flights were within such standards. Peak levels of C02 and particulate were observed during both boarding and deboarding periods.

On ventilation needs - towards demand controlled ventilation in dwellings.

Ventilation needs in dwellings must be determined on the basis of both requirements to theindoor air quality and necessary control of moisture conditions. As a first step towardsdevelopment of energy efficient ventilation strategies for demand controlled ventilation infuture dwellings theoretical analyses comprising a literature study and mathematicalsimulations have been carried out.

"Humid Air" and cooled walls.

The humidity of room air is a necessary influence of design under the aspects of thermalbehavior, technology and conservation.The moisture absorption in the walls through sorptive materials or dehumidification on thecold window surface by dew point condensation is low because of the new thermalcharacteristics of these components.The moisture load of a room briefly or also continuously, caused by technological processesor the users cant be compensated.Today, the walls are used like a floor heating system.

Improvements on passive ventilation: a world wide design tool and architectural mechanisms to ensure comfort in equatorial tropical humid areas.

Passive solar cooling for hot humid areas represents an important field for innovation, if we want to solve comfort needs in spaces (especially housing) designed to reduce economic, technical and health requirements. In urban areas or deep valleys and rain forests, which are common in most of the tropical equatorial countries, external breeze is not frequent and air speeds are too low to produce cooling, using a simple cross ventilation system. Since 1982 the author has developed new designs and constructions using passive solar techniques.

Temperature and humidity: important factors for perception ofair quality and for ventilation requirements.

A series of experiments was carried out to study the effect of temperature and humidity on the perception of indoor air quality. The study included both laboratory and controlled field experiments using an untrained sensory panel to judge the air quality at different levels of temperature and humidity. Facial and whole-body exposure for a short term (up to 20 minutes) was used in the laboratory study, and long-term whole-body exposure (up to 4. 6 hours) was used in the field study. The study found a significant impact of temperature and humidity on the perception of indoor air quality.
