This paper presents a comparative study based on CFD simulation between the performance of Impinging Jet Ventilation (IJV) and Mixing Ventilation (MV) systems in providing indoor air quality and thermal comfort for a mechanically ventilated occupied large open plan office (floor-to-ceiling height > 5m). Large spaces differ from spaces with standard heights because of the significant upward stratification.

A literature review has revealed that there is a very limited number of numerical or experimental studies of the air flow for mechanically ventilated large occupied rooms. Existing literature suggests that a room with more than 5 meters floor-to-ceiling height can be considered as a large space. The aim of this paper is to present a set of detailed air temperature and velocity measurements in a large open plan office located in south England.

The purpose of this study is to figure out the characteristics of thermal environment in a workshop at school in Japan and to propose the improvement method of the thermal environment without air-conditioning systems. In this paper, measurement results of thermal environment in the workshop and calculation results of vertical temperature gradient are shown. In the measurement results, indoor air temperature became very high in summer. Solar radiation was the main factor raising the temperature of PC roof, and large vertical temperature gradient was formed.

In the light of global environmental problems, it is vital for buildings to conserve energy and make use of natural energies. Natural ventilation is one important method for achieving this. In houses, natural ventilation is a very attractive way to control the indoor environment. Compared to this, mid- to high-rise buildings include many closed spaces where windows cannot be opened and internal heat is trapped inside, which increases the cooling load. Based on this situation, consciousness of environmentally friendly buildings and utilization of natural energy becomes high.
