Gas monitoring using Fourier transform spectroscopy.

Quantitative and qualitative gas analysis is widely needed in present modern industrialized societies. The reasons for this need range from purely economical interests, to meeting the requirements of environmental and occupational health legislation. Examples of these applications include process effluent monitoring, emission monitoring, workplace safety monitoring, clinical blood gas monitoring, toxic gas monitoring in fires, chemical warfare agent detection and ambient air monitoring.

Error analysis of measurement and control techniques of outside air intake rates in VAV systems.

This paper provides a theoretical error analysis of common airflow measurement and control techniques to maintain minimum outside air intake rates in variable air volume (VA V) systems. The results of the error analysis indicate that control strategies using direct airflow measurement from either an averaging Pitot-tube array or an electronic thermal anemometry provided the best ventilation control.

Measurement of ventilation, air distribution and inter-zonal air flows in a 4-storey historic building using a passive tracer gas technique.

Air temperature, air humidity and ventilation has been measured in a Swedish baroque castle. Results are presented for a measurement campaign comprising four periods under varying climatic conditions. A passive tracer gas method, known as the homogeneous emission technique has been used to measure the ventilation rates and air distribution in the building. As the palace is essentially unheated, wind pressure is the main driving force for ventilation. The air change rate is highly varying and differs considerably in different parts of the building (0.5-1.5 ACH).

A new technique for measuring air change rates in a cross-ventilation model using the step down method of video image signals.

Air change rates in a cross-ventilation model were measured from the decay curves of video image signals obtained by the step down method assuming perfect mixing of tracer mists inside the spaces. Wind tunnel test results led to the following conclusions. 1) Ray extinction due to lighting scattering did not affect the measurement accuracy of the air change rates in the two-dimensional model. 2) Tracer mists in a diameter between 0.25 μ m and 2.0 μ m produced the same measurement accuracy.

A study of effects of ambient urban air pollution using personal samplers; a preliminary report.

Air pollution has been associated with an increased incidence of respiratory disease. However, significant differences may exist between air pollution levels measured at conventional fixed monitoring stations and actual levels inhaled by a subject. Furthermore, studies of effects of air pollution might best be done using asthmatics as study subjects, since they have irritable airways. This is a preliminary report of a study using a control and asthmatic group in which effects of air pollution are assessed by symptom and medication diaries and simple pulmonary function tests.
