Energy efficient renovation of houses.

Suggests draughtproofing and installation of controllable ventilation when retrofitting older residential buildings in the UK. Use of extract fans to remove moisture at source is recommended. The energy savings obtained in four case studies are presented.

Monitoring the effects of draught elimination.

Describes a retrofit carried out on a building of 36000 m3 volume in Northern Italy which eliminated air infiltration around windows using silicone caulking. The energy balance of the building was evaluated experimentally before and after the retrofit. Verifies the impact of unwanted air infiltration on a building's energy use. States that the analysis of the experimental data made it possible to extend the results obtained from town houses by other authors to apartment buildings.

Retrofitting of older buildings brings about a noticeable drop in air supply. Fireplaces in buildings need sufficient combustion air. Tight windows may cause insufficient air supply. Therefore an adequate combustion air flow for the fireplace may not be attained and poor combustion will take place. In this study data on length, tightness, etc of windows, doors and other openings in buildings of the last 30 years have been collected.

A method to assess the health and comfort changes among tenants after draught proofing of their flats.

The aim of the present study is to measure the possible health effects among tenants after certain characteristic energy conservation measures had been taken in their dwellings. Changes in comfort are also included. It is part of a number of projects on subjects such as indoor pollutant source control and changes in house dust mite populations related to moisture changes in retrofitted dwellings.
