Ventilating an attic.

A review of ventilation and the quality of ventilation air.

Ventilation is pivotal both in terms of indoor air quality and environmental issues such as greenhouse gas emissions. It also has a major impact on energy use in buildings. It is important, therefore that the role md impact of ventilation is filly understood. The purpose of this paper is to review these aspects with particular reference to recent research and developments. Key aspects are concerned with the role of ventilation in maintaining good indoor air quality, ensuring the quality of the outdoor air and incorporating strategies to ensure good ventilation performance.

Volatile organic compounds (VOC) in the Swedish housing stock.

Measurements of VOC, formaldehyde, temperature, relative humidity, ventilation and inspections of humidity related problems were made in 178 randomly selected Swedish dwellings. More than one hundred single VOCs was identified with a mean concentration less than 25 μg/m3. The concentration of 80% of the identified VO Cs were less than 10 μg/m3. One-family houses had a higher concentration of VOCs than multi family houses.

Lessons learned from the application of the Swedish Boverket-OVK procedure in Belgium.

In the framework of the Flemish “Kantoor 2000” research project, the BBRI invited a Swedish inspector to apply the Boverket-OVK procedure for checking the ventilation installations in three Belgian buildings. This experience was most illustrative for the actual status of ventilation systems in Belgium. The procedure being very simple to apply was still very effective and able to detect most problems with ventilation installations encountered in these buildings. To control the quality of ventilation systems, three aspects of the building process are important:

Ventilation in US manufactured homes: requirements, issues and recommendations.

US Manufactured homes are required to be built to Department of Housing and Urban Development’s Manufactured Home Construction and Safety Standards (MHCSS.) The National Fire Protection Association recently updated ventilation standards for manufactured h

Experimental study of wind-opposed buoyancy-driven natural ventilation.

This paper presents an experimental study of natural ventilation induced by combined forces of thermal buoyancy and opposing wind in a single-zone building. Experiments demonstrated that for a certain range of buoyancy strength and wind speed, two different stable ventilation modes and thus flow rates exist for a fixed building geometry at given buoyancy and wind strength. In these situations, the final ventilation mode and the ventilation flow rate are dependent on the ventilation history of the building.

Energy impact of ventilation in buildings.

The relative importance of ventilation in the energy balance of buildings has been increasing,as a consequence of control of heat exchanges through the envelope and internalgains. It is therefore very important to clearly understand the main factors that affect energyconsumption due to ventilation and potential ways to decrease the energy demand withoutaffecting IAQ.This study was developed within the European project TIP-VENT (JOULE).

Energy efficiency of ventilation systems.

The paper presents a short description of the measurement program and the data collected for the “SynergieHaus”-project initiated by PreussenElektra and partners (now merged to E.ON). Results of airtightness measurements (ACH 50-values) are shown for a to

Airflow rate performance of various ventilation systems. Results of measurement in a typical Belgian dwelling.

This paper presents the results of ventilation measurements taken in a non-occupied one-storey dwelling situated in the countryside. The measurements of the ventilation rates in the different rooms have been obtained by the use of tracer gases with the constant concentration technique. Four configurations of ventilation systems have been tested successively. The ventilation systems tested consist of natural air supply and mechanical exhaust. Both 'normal' air supply grilles and self-regulating grilles have been tested.
