Recap: Don’t Hold Your Breath – Implementing Effective Ventilation Strategies for Healthy Indoor Spaces

On March 21, 2025, the EDIAQI and LEARN projects co-hosted a webinar titled "Don't Hold Your Breath: Implementing Effective Ventilation Strategies for Healthy Indoor Spaces."
Arnold Janssens, Operating Agent of the AIVC, opened the session by tracing the evolution of ventilation from its energy-efficiency focus in the 1970s to its current emphasis on health and well-being. He highlighted AIVC's role in integrating sustainability with indoor air quality goals and discussed how smart ventilation systems are transforming building design by balancing energy performance with pollutant control. He also emphasized the importance of tailored ventilation solutions for vulnerable populations regarding IAQ-related health risks in settings such as schools, healthcare facilities, and elderly care homes.
The event also featured presentations from Omar Allahham (American University of Beirut), who showcased how natural ventilation and motion-harvesting were effectively applied in Beirut’s Salim Salam Tunnel, offering solutions for complex urban infrastructure; Andreas Scope (Mann + Hummel) on behalf of the LEARN project, who offered a structured exploration of filtration and adsorption technologies, focusing on how they can be adapted to protect the most sensitive indoor occupants; and Dejan Strbad (Ascalia), who demonstrated EDIAQI’s AI-enhanced filtration pilot.
