A ventilated cavity wall is often proposed in the building envelope design as an alternative to thetraditional wall, mostly due to its ability in reducing the thermal load during the hot season. In order to be recommended as a solution for improving the thermal comfort, a thorough analysis of its performance under all possible scenarios is required. For assessing the thermal performance of the cavity wall, an experimental model has been built and tested at the DECivil of IST. Turbulent convective flow has been induced into the cavity by means of a climatic chamber, the relevant parameters such as temperature and heat flux being monitored with appropriate equipment connected to a data logging device. The experiments were carried out for three gap widths. At the same time, a numerical model that accounts for the convection-conduction conjugate-problem hasbeen developed for comparison and validation purposes. The experimental and numerical results agree well with each other. Furthermore, an experimental analysis on the ventilated cavity wall is performed against the reference case of closed cavity.
