To examine present situation of energy consumption, an extensive survey was carried out as a projectof Architectural Institute of Japan (AIJ). More than 80 houses that were typical to the present Japanesehousing sector were chosen nationwide. As a part of this project, we measured the energyconsumption of 13 houses in Kansai region. The annual energy consumption in these13 houses rangesfrom 30 to 70 GJ from April 2003 to March 2004. Even in intermediate periods (spring and autumn)when there were no heating and cooling loads, the difference in the electricity consumption was morethan 2 times between the least and most consuming houses. Therefore, the most energy consuminghouse was analyzed focusing on the using period of electrical appliances, and examined what kind ofaction would influence the energy consumption with help of questionnaire survey. It was found that thehouses whose residents stay home during daytime tend to use more energy than the houses withoutresidents during daytime. This implicates the residents way of life during daytime becomes aninfluential factor on energy consumption.
