Planning and implementing airtightness with an airtightness design

According to the legal regulations and the rules of technology (as generally accepted) new buildings are to be constructed permanently airtight.

In order to do so, an airtight building envelope has to be carefully planned prior to the actual construction process. This is how it is stipulated in the German Industrial Standard DIN 4108- 7 that also features some first principles for planning. The term airtightness design has been going around for a few years now, but for a long time had not even been clearly defined. The Association for Airtightness in Buildings (FLiB) has recently published a guideline with specific recommendations for developing airtightness designs as well as some indications.

KfW (German Reconstruction Loan Corporation) requires an airtightness design for its most important funding programs for energy-performance related modernizations as well as new buildings. In its technical FAQs, it makes reference to the FLiB guideline.

The presentation discusses the principal steps when planning, from planning the airtightness layer of individual building components via determining the connection details to the actual implementation, as well as the respective underlying planning and construction principles.
