Energy conservation, climatic control and moisture in buildings.

This report gives a summary of research and its results at the Department of Building Science, Lund Institute of Technology, Sweden. Fields of research are: design and performance of low energy new buildings, energy conservation in existing buildings, utilisation of solar heat, climatic control, climatic control in foreign climates, especially desert climates, and moisture research.

A contribution to the calculation of natural ventilation of industrial buildings. Ein Beitrag zur Berechnung der freien Luftung von Industriegebauden.

Describes the network procedure for calculating the most energy-conserving and economical form of natural ventilation of a building. Provides application examples in the form of the determination of mass air flows through doors and windows and cracks in industrial work sheds. Provides the results of a calculation of crack ventilation in winter with mechanical ventilation with positive pressure, plus optimisation of air flow through a cooling bed for hot rolled steel sections.

Indoor air quality: some residential answers.

Treats major design and construction actions that can be taken in houses to limit conduction losses, increase heating performance, reduce energy losses through windows and provide adequate ventilation air - super insulation, high performance furnace or boiler, high performance windows and controlled ventilation. Discusses in some detail how controlling indoor air pollutants at source is the preferred approach to maintaining indoor air quality. Illustrates diagrammatically and explains how a house functions under natural ventilation conditions.

Residential energy conservation strategy.

Describes an energy conservation strategy for a private home in Columbus Ohio and the benefits that resulted after nine years. The net result of the conservation steps was to reduce the annual house heating energy requirement from approximateley 1060 CCF of natural gas to 410 CCF and annual water heating energy requirement from approximately 400 CCF to 234 CCF. Thecombined savings at the present rate of $65/CCF was $530 per year. Includes a list of conclusions drawn from the experiment.

Demonstration of air leakage reduction program in Navy family housing.

The Department of Defense has an ongoing program to conserve energy at its installations. One method of energy conservation in residential units is the reduction of excessive air leakage by appropriate retrofits. Under the sponsorship of the Office of Navy Family Housing, a demonstration of air leakage reduction was undertaken at the Great Lakes Naval Training Center. Twoprocedural documents were prepared in draft form: a manual for use by supervision and a handbook for the on-base mechanics doingthe air leakage retrofits.

Field performance of an air infiltration barrier.

A spun-bonded polyolefin air infiltration barrier (AIB) was installed immediately beneath the siding of a 5-year-old, ranch-style house [conventional comparison house (CCH)]. The AIB reduced the heating energy consumption by 24% over the remaining life of the house. This test confirmed earlier field studies and allowed the development of the mechanism by which AIBs function and the recommendation of required AIB physical properties.

The economics of energy conservation investments.

Asks the question, is home energy conservation a good investment, and offers two approaches to economic analysis - 'payback' and 'life cycle costing', that can help to simplify the decision making process.
