Measurement of ventilation and interzonal distribution in single family houses.

Ventilation air change rate, local mean age-of-air, and interzonal ventilation air distribution were measured for two single-family homes and eight ventilation systems. A multizone, single-gas, tracer gas decay measurement technique was used. A single-story, slab-on-grade, 1350 ff house was tested in Las ~gas, Nevada, and a two-story, 3192ft2 house with basement was tested in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Evaluating residential air duct cleaning and IAQ: results of a field study conducted in nine single family dwellings.

A nine-home field study was conducted to investigate the impact of mechanical air duct cleaning (ADC) methods on indoor air quality (IAQ) and system performance. ADC services were provided by the National Air Duct Cleaners Association (NADCA). Only mechanical ADC methods were evaluated. Surface treatments, such as biocides or encapsulants, were not part of the study. Pre- and post-ADC measurements were used to evaluate impacts.

Aspects of thermal preferences in humid tropical climates.

This paper presents the findings of two recent studies on the thermal preferences of householders in upland and coastal tropical environments. The aim of the studies was to investigate those behavioural factors that influence a householder's appreciation of an indoor environment. The studies involved 159 households in Kampala, Uganda, and 104 households in Surabaya, Indonesia. The studies indicated that householders made choices regarding their indoor environments based not on comfort sensation alone, but on "real-world factors".

A "new" approach to passive design for residential buildings in a tropical climate.

The typical passive design suggested for residential buildings in tropical hothumid climates is a lightweight building with many openings on the north and south walls to allow continuous natural ventilation, shaded by wide overhangs. In reality most people no longer favour this design approach for several reasons: building durability, noise problems. privacy, and social status. The work presented in this paper challenges the typical design suggestions and shows other alternatives that are more suitable for this climatic region.

Low energy urban housing: six European Union demonstration projects.

The SUNH and SHINE European Commission THERMIE 1996 Targeted Projects aim to demonstrate for European urban housing sector the relevance of a serie of innovative technologies (applied on 10 new 1;onstructions within SUNH and 6 retrofrtting projects within SHINE) to reduce C02 emissions through the implementation of different RUE & RES techniques. After the general presentation of SUNH and SHINE made during the PLEA conference of Lisbon, this paper aims to give a detailed presentation of the most advanced projects using slides and video.

A case study on global-conscious and local-oriented housing design in a hot and humid climate. Part 2: evaluation of the thermal environment in indoor and semi-outdoor spaces.

In order to confirm the effectiveness of the indoor climate control system adopted in the experimental house, the indoor climate in summer was evaluated for the experimental house and two other buildings in Nanning city and a comparison was made. Two vernacular buildings which have natural indoor and semi-outdoor cooling systems were selected for the study The majority of the measurements were taken using the spherical thermography system. The results showed that the quality of the indoor thermal environment of each building is approximately the same.

Comfortability in urban houses of the tropics.

For a house to be habitable it needs to be comfortable. In the warm humid climates interiors need to be cool for most of the year in order to be comfortable vis a vis habitable. There are many factors that contribute to the comfortable part of the overall habitability of a house particularly its aspects of design. The paper analyses the thermal conditions in ten different houses in Dhaka, Bangladeshi in representative days of the three main seasons and tries to identify design aspects that make some houses more comfortable hence habitable than others

Research and development of a passive solar house with airflow system in brick walls.

Research and development of new-type passive solar houses are the main purpose of this paper. The proposed passive solar houses haven an air circulation system in brick walls combined with passive heating and cooling systems. A prototype model house with a solar collector and Trombe walls was constructed and its thermal performance was measured to evaluate this new system. The efficiency on the real size model house with attached green houses is discussed through thermal performance simulations.
