This report addresses the factors causing water vapour problems and provides insights into the solutions available with particular emphasis on vapour barrier paints. Concludes that 1. moisture flow in structures is a dynamic, systemic process of multiple variables, and therefore requires an integrated approach for management, 2. retrofit applications offer an entirely different set of physical and economic considerations than are found in new construction and therefore require a different approach, 3.
This report focuses on the repair and upgrading of existing windows to acceptable levels of air and thermal resistance. Improvements to existing windows can be effectively achieved for as low as 25 to 50 cents per square foot by caulking and weatherstripping the primary window and then installing an inexpensive interior storm window. 27 interior storm window products are examined and details of design, operation and performance are given. Air infiltration test results are also examined and the thermal performance of each window system in terms of whole house energy savings is evaluated.
Retrofitting of older buildings brings about a noticeable drop in air supply. Fireplaces in buildings need sufficient combustion air. Tight windows may cause insufficient air supply. Therefore an adequate combustion air flow for the fireplace may not be attained and poor combustion will take place. In this study data on length, tightness, etc of windows, doors and other openings in buildings of the last 30 years have been collected.
From a hygienic viewpoint, optimum indoor air quality can be characterized as the complete absence of pollutants. The most important sources of such pollutants are reviewed, including those entering a room from outside, those generated by human activity and those emanating from various materials. Thebasic requirement is for all emissions to be as low as possible. For CO2 and formaldehyde the existing standards are reasonable. For most of the other substances it is not recommended to define tolerable limit values since such definition may decrease the efforts to attain a zero level.
Reports on use of supply and exhaust ventilation with heat recovery in prefabricated houses and multi-storey buildings. In thermal super insulated buildings the system can supply heat demand down to an outside temperature of5 degrees C: additional electric storage heating is used below thistemperature. The ventilation system operates at an air change rate of approximately 0.7 per hour in the following way: exhaust air from the kitchen, bathroom, and WC, supply air to the living and bedrooms. It is combined with an air to air heat pump.
Ventilation heat losses have been investigated in an experimental low energy house with active and passive solar energy use and an auxiliary heater. A measuring method was developed and tested which gave the possibility of dispensing with long-duration tests in occupied dwellings. The heat losses are dependent on characteristic data of the room and the diminution of the room temperature with time. Measuring error is less than 10%.

A steady state multi-cell calculation model has been developed in order to predict the interconnection between airtightness and ventilation rates. The model has been tested with measured leakage data of a detached house.
